Episode 14 – Focus like a champion: focus mindset tips

Un-productivity traps are everywhere. For example, take your mobile phone.

Do you frequently find yourself reaching for your mobile device feeling distracted and uninspired?

While they may make it difficult to pay full attention to your work, there are things you can do to prevent this from happening. In this article let’s discuss focus mindset tips so you can be more productive, and achieve better results. Let’s get to it!

Tip #1: Live in the present

When you are plagued with useless and irrelevant thoughts (that we often entertain – worry, anxiety, regret, conflict, “news” and gossip), one can’t help but wonder how much energy is actually wasted on these “thoughts” instead of being utilized for the task at hand.

Therefore, it’d be common sense to realize a present-focused mind makes an effective, focused person.

What to do:

Most of the successful people around the world have some kind of meditative practice in their routine, so adopt the same approach for a champion focus. Firstly, it’ll help you to focus on the present moment and away from future (ie. anxiety, worry), past (regret) and geo-arbitrary (“news”, gossip, etc.) thoughts.

It’ll also help you to calm your physiology as well through breathing and heart control as well as conscious activation of your “rest and digest” system (parasympathetic nervous system activation). The easiest method to start is breathing meditation but there are dozens more.

Tip #2: Only the best, forget the rest.

Technology and the internet have expanded the “world” you live in. It’s given you wide exposure to so many ideas and opportunities – more places to visit, more great people to meet, and more awesome experiences – BUT at the expense of depth.

The thing is you only have so much time in your day (let alone life) so you really have to “zero in” on what’s important to get anything done – and forget the rest.

What to do:

While technology has created so much width in everyone’s life, it’s also stolen “depth time.” The philosophy of “only the best, forget the rest” reminds you to allocate time better, focus on fewer things, and doing those few things well. “You can have it all — just not all at once.

Tip #3: Work on resting more

Rest is the key to overall productivity. Although seemingly counterproductive, regular rest in your day helps your overall productivity. It creates time for you to “reboot” your brain cells, thereby maintaining maximum focus. Forcing yourself to work for extended periods is extremely unproductive. It’s like swimming against the “tide.”

What to do:

A good principle to follow is the 25 – 5 rule where you work for 25 minutes, and then take a break for 5 minutes. Get back into it for 25, and rest for 5 more.

During the five-minute rest period you can:

  • Fit in your distracting activities such as social media or mobile app games.
  • Socialize
  • Move – go for a walk or do a little dance
  • Get some water
  • Whatever you want as long as it breaks the monotony of your work.
